LOCR Producer: The Sega Dreamcast was a big review for us. Here in Australia, especially where we grew up, Sega was definitely winning the console wars, then, Sony came along and the Saturn had a lot of buzz, but couldn’t quite cut through like the Playstation did. In the lead up to the Dreamcast, there were showbags, lots of leaked footage and magazines flooding the stands with latest updates and games.

The Dreamcast stirred up a lot of excitement, not only because it was a really powerful system, but because it had some great, unique titles. While the Playstation and PS2 were distancing themselves from games with pixels over polygons, the dreamcast got the full capcom treatment, multiple street fighters, marvel vs capcom 1 and 2, Capcom vs SNK 1 and 2, Gunbird 2, and even though you’ll be able to find most of these games elsewhere, in general, you’ll find the Dreamcast versions are superior.

The system was also perfectly capable of 3D games and titles like Sonic, Soul Calibur and Jet Set Radio.

The Dreamcast will really appeal gamers with a more refined taste than the playstation crowd. Refined in the sense that the pixel was thoroughly more embraced and the fighting and shooting genres were of an extreme quality.

The Dreamcast was really slanted to bring the arcade experience home and even though it couldn’t survive the PS2 (I didn’t have the heart to tell Brusier), it’s a great system with a lot of quality games and some of my favourite hardware for a console (controllers, rumble packs and the VMU).
