Terrorsaur – Beast Wars Reissue Review

An underhanded, opportunistic Predacon warrior that spends just as much time plotting against Megatron as he does the Maximals.

Terrorsaur is a basic Beast Wars Transformer, released originally as part of the first wave of figures in 1996. Three other basics were released alongside Terrorsaur including Rattrap, Razorbeast and Iguanus. All the basic figures from the first wave had a similar spring-loaded transformation feature. By pulling the Pteranodon’s head up, Terrorsaur transformers from beast to robot mode.

When Terrorsaur was originally released, similar to Rattrap, the figures came packaged with a rocky-style bubble on card. The reissues did a great job of capturing that original style and branding, but Terrorsaur missed out on that rocky-style bubble. The back of the card gives instructions on how to transform the figure, along with Terrorsaur’s bio and stat card.

Beast Mode

In beast mode, we get Terrosaur transformed as a Pteranodon, a flying dinosaur close to a pterodactyl. The figure is painted bright red with green spots, which is hard to miss and not entirely accurate to the cartoon or the actual animal. In beast mode, Terrorsaur has a little articulation with his mouth as well as the feet.

Similar to the other basic figures that were reissued, Rattrap and Iguanus, Terrorsaur has also been reclassified as a deluxe figure and they have all been priced the same as the larger figures like Cheetor, Wolfang and Retrax.

A representation of what a Pteranodon may have looked like

A year after Terrorsaur was originally released, a repainted version was released removing the green spots and swapping his purple plastic for something more show accurate. A lot of the early Beast Wars figures came first, with the show being released later in 1996. I’m really pleased we got the original paint job with minimal changes. A little strangely, Terrorsaur’s arms are installed on the wrong side, which is an easy fix by swapping them at the shoulder. Just check where the figure’s thumbs are to replace them accurately.

Robot Mode

Once Terrorsaur transforms with the flip of the head, we get a figure very similar to Rattrap. There are ball joints everywhere and again, similar to Rattrap, he’s very difficult to position and keep up right. The tail of the Pteranodon comes down to form his chest piece, which also reveals a hidden cavity behind his head that holds his blaster. After removing it, you fold the barrel down to form the weapon.

In the Cartoon

Terrorsaur has a lot of grand ambitions, to overthrow Megatron and become the leader of the Predacon army. Often in the cartoon series we see him fail as we tries to team up with characters , like Dinobot and Rhinox, or hide energy sources. Terrorsaur often is paired with Waspinator to spy on the Maximals and carry out reconnaissance.
