Sonic & Knuckles (Sega Mega Drive (Genesis))

Sonic & Knuckles (Sega Mega Drive (Genesis))

The end of an era. The last Sonic game on the Sega Mega Drive.

It’s hard to talk about Sonic & Knuckles without a million references to Sonic the Hedgehog 3. I’ve mentioned Sonic & Knuckles plenty of times in my Sonic 3 review, and I’ve mentioned Sonic 3 plenty of times here too.

Both games had been developed beside each other, and I’ve had plenty of time to talk about how amazing Sonic the Hedgehog 3 looked, well, Sonic & Knuckles seems like it wound up with some of the best level design out of the two titles, totally harking back to what made Sonic 2 so awesome. I can honestly say that I’m totally biased for the first two Sonic titles on the Mega Drive purely due to nostalgia, but Sonic & Knuckles is a game I’m really stoked to have played.

The Sonic games have been on the list of ‘games to review’ for a very long time, harking back to the Master System Sonic title being planned for one of my first ten reviews. It’s a hard series to crack into and we chose to get the ball rolling with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and it only seems fitting now to review its partner in crime, Sonic & Knuckles.

So Sonic & Knuckles was a hard review to produce, straying into both a family friendly and mainstream game at the same time. This is a labour of our love for the Sega brand, so don’t expect us to jump on an opportunity to talk about Mario anytime soon.
